Partner Spotlight: A Lotta Love
FMF has a wonderful partnership with A Lotta Love, a nonprofit that “alleviates the trauma of homelessness and domestic violence by creating safe, dignified, and emotionally inspiring spaces.” Their volunteers complete makeovers for guest rooms, and when families leave, they are gifted with the bedding, linens, and more to make their new permanent homes comfortable and safe. This year A Lotta Love also renovated the guest kitchen and therapy room.
Last year they published a research article by the American Psychological Association on the impact of trauma-informed design on psychological well-being in homeless shelters. Learn more about how A Lotta Love alleviates the trauma of homelessness by watching this short video: A Lotta Love: Alleviating the Trauma of Homelessness. We truly value this partnership and everything they've done for our families! |
Save the Date! Join us on the morning of May 6th for our second annual Rock the Block Day of Service! We will be revitalizing the facility with volunteer projects and community involvement. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to serve. There will be music, food, and the celebration of service! |
Celebrating Black History Month
FMF is celebrating Black History Month, honoring historical figures all around the facility. During one of our Youth Enrichment Workshops, the youth made self-affirming pieces. Visit our Instagram (@familiesmovingforwardnc) or Facebook to view all of the decor. We also had many of our programs centered around Black History: - The Durham Chapter of the Links came to facilitate an educational activity around black historical figures.
- We had a guest participate in the Black History Wax Museum: Remembering Black Wall Street, put on by Wall Street Journal, and brought our families to enjoy the event.
- We took families to see Dreamgirls at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh.
- Tomorrow will be a "Soulful Expressions Paint Night" Family Fun Night, focusing on empowerment!
