Volunteer Spotlight: Parent Store Shopkeeper
"During the short time I’ve been at FMF, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some truly wonderful people- both staff and residents. This experience has been very humbling and incredibly eye-opening for me. My life circumstances have not put me in the same position as the residents here, though it could have. The difference is that family took me in until I got on my feet. The residents here at FMF are just like anybody else. Life circumstances have made all the difference. From day one I’ve asked lots of questions and Anna [Krecklow] has graciously answered all of them. I had no idea FMF or anyplace like it existed.
I love the idea of money (Monopoly money) being used by residents to purchase items from the store. Initially I thought the money was called “division dollars," but I was quickly corrected and told they were “decision dollars." It makes all the sense in the world... make a good decision and get compensated for it. Earning “decision dollars" by attending programs and completing requirements in my opinion is revolutionary! After all, one has to spend money to take care of one’s family in the outside world, right?
Kudos to FMF for accepting FAMILIES. It’s important that families aren’t split up when a loss of residence occurs. Women and children to one shelter and men to a different shelter can cause more upset and trauma to an already difficult situation. I feel extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to learn about Families Moving Forward and be here to assist those in need during a very difficult time." -Kimberly Copland Parent Store Shopkeeper Volunteer |
