Dear Friends-
As we mark the painful anniversary of one full year of the pandemic, it’s encouraging to note the many ways that the current season contrasts with the fear and anxiety of a year ago. On my walk this morning, I passed Club Boulevard Elementary and saw students happily returning to in-person instruction. With the approval of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and increased supplies of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, the State has been able to accelerate the vaccination schedule and many North Carolinians are now fully or partially vaccinated. Our guests at Families Moving Forward became eligible just last week, and many of our guests are planning to attend vaccination events over the next several weeks. These developments, coupled with the beautiful spring weather, are leading me to feel downright hopeful about the future.
While it’s clear that we’re not out of the woods yet, the metrics of the pandemic are trending in the right direction. Our contingency planning is now focused on reopening our kitchens, our in-person enrichment programming, and our children’s services. We know that the new normal won’t look quite like the old normal. But as vaccinations progress, we hope that by summer many of our services and supports will be returning to something that our staff and volunteers recognize as familiar. These decisions will be made, first and foremost, with safety in mind. But it is also our sincere hope that in the coming months, we are able to fully return to the high-touch, two generation approach that characterized our services before the pandemic.
Whether you’ve been vaccinated or not, I hope that each of you has that opportunity very, very soon. Like many of you, I am craving a return to hugs, handshakes and in-person meetings. God willing, we’ll be there soon. We couldn’t have made it through the last year without your generous support. On behalf of the board, staff and guests at FMF, thank you for helping us get through the last year. Be safe, and I look forward to seeing you in-person, very soon.
