Our Gala is Going Virtual!!
We're only FIVE weeks away from our first Virtual Gala!
That’s right - you can still enjoy this amazing community celebration in the safety and comfort of your own home. We’ll host a brief program (only 30 minutes- you can do this), an online silent auction (hello fave Durham haunts and cool experiences), and something for your sweet tooth (shhh, it's a surprise)!
We appreciate all of our Chefs for Change loyal sponsors, series pass holders, volunteers, ticket holders and CHEFS! We’re still in this together and hope that you will join us. Tickets are available at fmfnc.org/gala.
Bedding Requested
As the weather cools down and new families move in, our need for bedding becomes more urgent. Typically, Shana will buy out all of the Back-to-School Clearance bedding at Target but with so much going on, she hasn't had the chance to make her annual trip. If you love to bargain shop but don't need anything for your own family, consider purchasing bedding on behalf of your neighbors at FMF. We are in need of pillows, twin and full sized sheet sets and comforters! Contact Katy (katy@fmfnc.org) to schedule a donation drop-off.
FMF wants YOU to VOTE!
It should come to you as no surprise that your friends and neighbors want you to vote in the November 3rd election because so much is at stake! We at FMF believe that housing is a human right and that one cannot be anti-poverty without also being anti-racist.
What does the election have to do with homeless services?
“You've got to vote, vote, vote, vote. That's it; that's the way we move forward. That's how we make progress for ourselves and for our country.” - Michelle Obama
Families Share Their Voice
We were delighted to be selected as a Family Voice partner for NC Child, an organization dedicated to "advancing strategies and policies to ensure all NC children grow up in a state that truly invests in their potential." 36 families (NEST, Branching Out, and Alumni) completed interviews or surveys about how they support their kids and what resources in the community they wish existed to support kids as they grow into kind, compassionate, resilient, caring young people. We are thankful to NC Child for this opportunity to elevate families' voices to shape policy and we are thankful to all participating families who shared their stories and dreams for the world we can create for kids!
Congratulations to Jameelah on her first paycheck with her new employment! With support from Nick Lansing, our AmeriCorps VISTA Workforce Development Associate and our community partners at Step Up Durham, Jameelah's new job at the Scrap Exchange has paid off. This great picture was shared in the latest Step Up newsletter. New FMF Faces Give a warm and socially distanced welcome to our new Americorps VISTAs and Interns: Caylin Luebeck Aftercare Programming Associate
Hailing from Michigan, Caylin recently graduated from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor (Go Blue!!), where she studied International Studies with a focus on Global Health and Environmental Science. As FMF’s Aftercare Programming Associate she hopes to learn more about advocacy and community-based change, she's also excited to interact with a variety of community partnerships. Outside of work you can find Caylin reading almost any style of book (no horror stories please), hiking on the various trails North Carolina offers, or thrifting at various thrift shops in the Triangle. Olivia Gilmore Nest Programming Associate
After developing sustainable music education programs for children in Nepal and completing her MA in International Education Development, Olivia has returned home to the states to join the FMF team. In her new position, Olivia is overseeing virtual Study Buddies and programming educational workshops for all guests in shelter. She hopes to learn more about how to best meet the educational needs of those experiencing homelessness in Durham. In her free time, Olivia loves to play the trumpet, sing jazz, and do martial arts. Brittney Arrington Marriage and Family Therapy Counseling Intern
Brittney obtained her Bachelor's degree in Social work from East Carolina University. Currently she is a graduate student at Capella University. She is our Marriage and Family Therapy Counseling Intern. She loves working with families and children and felt that FMF would be a great fit for her future career goals. Through her position at FMF, she hopes to bring awareness to the importance of mental health, offer a place of comfort for those in need, and work with the community to find ways to reduce homelessness. Some of Brittney's favorite things to do are to read, write, listen to music, enjoy nature, and travel. Makayla Cook MSW Nest Intern
Makayla is a current graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, working towards obtaining her Master in Social Work. Makayla attended Western Carolina University for her undergraduate education and received her Bachelor of Social Work in May 2020. Makayla is excited to learn more about the issues, policies, and resources surrounding homelessness. While she wants to go a different direction with her social work degree, Makayla hopes she can leave a positive impact on the lives of those she meets during this year, create change, and learn more about homelessness. Makayla is a mountain girl at heart. Her favorite snacks include takis, butterfingers, and strawberries. And lastly, she has two pups, named Koa and Finn.
