Chefs For Change
After over a year of waiting and anticipation, we were finally able to come together to eat, drink, and reconnect with all of our amazing friends at the rescheduled July 26th Chefs for Change Dinner with Chef Damion Moore from Dame’s Chicken and Waffles. Even with extra precautions like reducing capacity and spacing tables out, The Rickhouse was filled with laughs and smiles (not to mention full stomachs)! A huge thanks to Chef Damian for preparing an absolutely delicious meal with a New Orleans flare honoring his family roots. We want to send thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors who made this event possible, and to our community of friends and supporters who make these events possible.
Goodbye and Good Luck
While most of our supporters know that our longtime Executive Director, Ryan Fehrman, has moved on to a new opportunity to serve as the ED of the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness, his impact on FMF cannot be summarized in a newsletter blurb.
Stay tuned for our mid-month e-blast from our Interim ED and Development Director, Shana Carignan, to see pictures and read how the staff, board, and Durham community were able to honor him over the past month. Additionally, we will share information on the Executive Search led by moss + ross. Ryan certainly has left quite a legacy and the hardworking staff remain steadfast in their commitment to our vision: “Every family thriving in a safe, stable home.”
Camp Phoenix
“I liked making new friends and my first time going to camp!”
The reviews are in and this year’s Camp Phoenix was a rousing success! On July 17th the amazing folks at Baynes Family Farm hosted our kids for their annual Camp Phoenix. Camp was shortened to just one day this year, but that didn’t stop them from making it a day to remember. Waterslides, bouncy houses, water balloons, fishing, swimming, burlap bag races, arts and crafts, football, BBQ, and so much more made this year’s Camp Phoenix one our kids will never forget!
And as if putting together this incredible camp wasn’t enough, the Baynes Family also gave each family who attended a new Chromebook and provided a generous financial donation to FMF. We are so blessed to have people in our community who consistently go above and beyond to support our mission like them. Please join us in celebrating and thanking Steve Baynes and everyone at the Baynes Family Farm for putting smiles on our kids’ faces and joy in their hearts.
Summer Break Fellowship
Even though our Summer Break Fellowship had to be scaled back this year due to the pandemic, that didn’t stop our Programming Team from putting on an amazing 4 days of fun! FMF’s Teen Summer Fellowship is a week of events inspired by the wonderful teens at FMF that allows them to explore their passions and connect with the community.
This year’s fellowship included educational sessions on cultural diversity, robotics, ancient Egypt, space exploration, human & Earth interaction, filmmaking, and a session on heat-mapping with the Museum of Life and Science! The teens all had a blast and we want to shout out our Programming Team for their creativity.
Volunteer With Us!
Families Moving Forward is looking for a fun and caring individual to fill our Kids Store Shopkeeper Volunteer position.
The Shopkeeper will be responsible for operating and maintaining our kids store by overseeing the purchase of toys, books, and other kid-friendly items for the children/youth in our shelter with play money the kids earn from a variety of activities. The volunteer will also open the store (generally for two hours) and oversee its operation during that time.
The full position description can be found here, or on our website fmfnc.org/individuals. If you want to get involved to help us serve children experiencing homelessness please contact Imani Vincent at imani@fmfnc.org for more information.
In-Kind Needs Update
School is back and that means Back to School sales! Now is the perfect time to find great deals on bedding at stores like Target, Walmart, and Amazon. We are still in need of full and twin sized comforters, sheets, and pillows. While you are out getting ready for the new school year, please consider purchasing an extra set of bedding for donation.
Are you shopping for a young person's Back to School outfit? Help the teens living in our emergency shelter start the year off with a cool new outfit. Donate $25 gift cards from Old Navy, TJ Maxx, etc!
