Dear Friends-
After sixteen years as executive director and close to twenty years at the agency, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave Families Moving Forward to become the next executive director of the NC Coalition to End Homelessness (NCCEH). Genesis Home and FMF have been a huge part of my adult life and it has been a true honor to lead this agency through good times and bad. And to be clear, there have been far more highlights and accomplishments than trials and tribulations. For that I thank you, our caring community, our all-star staff who consistently go above and beyond for our families, and our volunteers who help provide the programming and hospitality that make FMF so special. I can’t possibly express how proud I am of what we’ve built together, and I know that the future is bright for FMF.
I’d be remiss not to also thank our many partners in Durham, the Triangle, and across the state. We can’t end homelessness in a silo. Wicked problems like poverty and homelessness require collaborative solutions. From our friends including UMD, Housing for New Hope and Durham’s Partnership for Children in the Durham Collaborative to End Family Homelessness, to the Community Development Department and Durham County DSS and too many others to name, we couldn’t do this work without you. We value your partnership and appreciate all the ways that you serve our families and children.
I’m excited to continue the fight against homelessness in a new capacity, and I fully intend to try and scale up some of the interventions that make FMF so unique. I’m a true believer in our two-generation approach and in providing assessments, services and supports to our youngest guests. If we really want family homelessness to be nonrecurring, which is a stated goal of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), we have to prioritize the needs of our kids and collaborate with the early childhood system to ensure that our young people are not adversely impacted by the trauma of homelessness and housing instability.
This isn’t the end, but it is the start of a new chapter. The FMF board of directors has announced that our development director Shana Carignan will serve as the interim executive director in my absence and that Shana will be a candidate for the permanent position as the board conducts a full search. I couldn’t be more excited for Shana and I ask each of you to support her during the transition. I will continue to be a Durham resident and look forward to continuing this important work in a new role. I will always be a supporter of FMF and the families that we serve. The dynamics of our region’s struggles with homelessness and rising housing costs create a very real urgency and I ask each of you reading this note to continue to donate your time, talent and treasure in the coming months and years. Together, we can end the homelessness of the families that we serve and build a stronger community. Thank you for making our families and children a priority.
